Mastering Mac Excel Shortcuts with the Excel Skin. The Excel Skinny. And then paste into another document by using the Paste Special – Values Only. Copying and Pasting data is one of the most performed actions in Excel. There is a lot more to copy pasting then simple Control + C and Control + V. In this tutorial, you will learn all about the Excel Paste Special feature and useful Excel Paste Special Shortcuts. What is Excel Paste Special? What happens when you copy a cell in excel and paste it somewhere else? It copies not only the content of the cell but also the format such as background color, font color, borders(as shown below). But what if you want to copy only the cell contents and not the formatting, or only the formatting and not the values, or only the formula within it? You can’t do that with a simple copy paste but you can do that using Excel Paste Special functionality in Excel. Accessing Excel Paste Special Options? There are a couple of ways you can access the Excel Paste Special features. The first step is to copy the cells that you want to paste. Once you copy it, here are three different ways to access paste special in Excel: • Using the Ribbon: Go to Home –> Clipboard –> Paste –> Paste Special. ![]() This will open the Excel Paste Special Dialogue box. • Using Keyboard Shortcut: Use the Excel Paste Special Shortcut – Alt + E + S + V. • Using Right-click Menu: Right Click in the cell where you want to paste, and then select paste special. All these three options would open a Paste Special dialogue box, as shown below: Understanding Excel Paste Special Dialogue Box It could be overwhelming to see so many options for something as simple as copying and pasting in Excel. However, when you go through these, it makes a lot of sense to have these options available. If you have a good grip on these Excel Paste Special options, it can save you a lot of time (and you know time is money!). ![]() So let’s learn more about these options: Paste Options in the Paste Special Dialogue Box: These options enable you to paste selectively. For example, you can choose to only paste formulas, or values, or formats, or comments, etc. To use these, simply copy the cells, go the cell where you want to paste it, open the paste special dialogue box, and select the desired option. For example, suppose you have a data set where you have formatted the data using borders and fill colors. If you want to copy only the values, copy the data, go to the destination cell where you want the data to be copied, open the Excel Paste Special dialog box and select Values. This will only copy the data and not the formatting. Operation Options in the Paste Special Dialogue Box: Operations options give you a quick way to perform the given operations without applying a formula or directly changing the cell contents. The “safe bet” for a MacBook Pro for easily-portable music production is a 15 inch MacBook Pro. The screen will be big enough, if not roomy, to work with. The screen will be big enough, if not roomy, to work with. Which is better for music production/recording; a MacBook Pro or a MacBook Air? Update Cancel. # The best part - Mac OS, contains all that you need, a neat calendar, Todos app, notes, Quicktime, Mail app etc. Hassle free OS. The extra hours of battery life and slightly lighter weight is nice to have over the Pro, but for a studio. What Computer Should You Buy For Music Production You’ll be amazed to hear the music quality recorded from home recording studios. That being said, should you go for a Windows PC or a Mac? There is a war going on because of this subject itself, but having produced on a Mac & Windows before, let me give you my insights. Should You Buy A Mac? Apple Mac computers are beautifully designed and you feel good owning one. I started producing music on a on. Logic Studio was made by the same company, Apple, so I figured I shouldn’t have any problems using them both. I’d be honest. It was much easier to work on a Mac as compared to Windows. Installing my first software was pretty easy. I could depend on the Mac at all times. All I had to do whenever I wanted to make music is just power the computer on, launch my DAW and then make music. Good when inspiration strikes and you must put down ideas quickly. With a Mac, you get Core Audio as your built-in audio driver. Core Audio is brilliant and you have close to no issues using it with your favourite DAW or when doing screencasting. ![]() On the other hand, Windows Audio is horrible when it comes to music production and screen casting. (I even had to find a new solution when doing ). My second Mac machine was the iMac. I bought an iMac for my recording studio and continue to finish many productions on it. Another reason why I liked the iMac a lot is because it was almost near silent-less. No noisy fans or loud spinning hard disks. That made it a perfect machine for recording in the same room if you’re recording in your home studio. Let’s Look At Some Mac Computers You Might Buy Macbook / Macbook Pro. Macbook Retina 2015 First of all, please do not buy the new Macbook Retina 2015 for music production. Despite what people say, the Macbook Retina are not made for music production. It may be good for writers or web users on the go but not for a music producer. On the other hand, Macbook Pros are fair for music production. Besides being portable, it has the power to take on many recording projects you throw at it. I’m not talking about big film scoring projects. For that, you’ll need a desktop machine, which we’ll get into later. Macbook Pros also ships with a number of ports, like the Thunderbolt which is recognized by many audio hardware companies. It’s easy to find an audio interface with a thunderbolt connection. There are a few things you have to watch before investing in a Macbook Pro. First, while it’s really fast, most Macbook Pros ship with very little hard disk storage. I find this limiting because I normally install lots of sample instruments into my computer. A installation will take up to 320GB of space on your computer, more than what most Macbook Pros ship with. An iMac in a home recording studio I like the iMac a lot not because it’s really quiet, but because you get a large screen real estate. Trust me, I’ve tried working on a film scoring project with over 60 tracks on small laptop screen and though it’s do-able, I found myself squinting and scrolling all over my DAW. As you fill your DAW with tracks, you’ll start to crave for more screens to work upon. The iMac also has lots of ports for connectivity. I like to think of the iMac as a big laptop. And oh, you have to buy as much as RAM as your budget allows when you buy the iMac. Sucks, I know. Which iMac Should You Buy? It is always better to get a computer with the fastest processor, but if your budget won’t allow. You should be fine with starting off with an Core i5 at bare minimum. RAM however should be upgraded to the max. As for screens, having a big screen is nice but you can always add another screen later on. My iMac 09′ lasted me for about 4 years before I finally grew sick of it’s sluggishness in coping with the latest softwares and projects size. All the computing power you’ll ever need in the studio Got all the budget and want to go big? Then get the Mac Pro. I’ve never got my hands to actually finish a music piece on a Mac Pro, but looking at its specifications I’d say it’s worth a go if you want the best on a Mac platform. The Mac Pro is actually an overkill for music production. I’ll lay down the pros for you. Check out IGN's editor picks for the best Mac video games. Update: At number 8, we've added Total War: Warhammer to our list, the latest entry in a long-running tabletop franchise, perfected for the PC. Strategy games make you think. They're not like most shooters that offer mindless gameplay, or the adventure game that has you leaping off cliffs and driving boats. Strategy games require your brain juices at all times to plan each move carefully and analyze what the opponent will do next – quickly. They require you to develop armies, build civilizations and gather resources in the process. But strategy games aren't just about the gameplay: they typically offer sprawling, geopolitical stories too that hook players and keep them focused on the campaign. That said, what makes a strategy game great is how it pulls players into its mythology and allows them to carry out missions without overcomplicating it. Here is a handful of strategy games on the PC and Mac that achieve this balance perfectly. Prev Page 1 of 9 Next Prev Page 1 of 9 Next 1. StarCraft II. Blizzard Entertainment launched the first StarCraft sci-fi military strategy game back in 1998, and while it was extremely popular, the game wasn't the mammoth product StarCraft II has become. With the sequel, Blizzard has released three installments that span one huge campaign: Wings of Liberty (2010), Heart of the Swarm (2013) and Legacy of the Void (2015). Each of these releases focus on a specific protagonist group: human exiles called the Terrans in Wings of Liberty, the Borg-like insectoids called Zerg in Heart of the Swarm, and the telepathic alien race known as the Protoss in Legacy of the Void. The overall campaign takes place four years after the Brood War expansion pack for the original StarCraft, beginning with Jim Raynor's quest to take down the tyrannical Terran Dominion. StarCraft II succeeds by combining sharp strategic gameplay and balance with an immersive story and scenery. The game also comes with its own level editor, allowing players to share their maps and mods via the Battle.net online community. ![]() Of course, StarCraft II can be played online – it's one of the widest-played eSports worldwide – but currently it does not provide local LAN play. StarCraft II can only be purchased from Blizzard Entertainment digitally and in boxed versions. Prev Page 2 of 9 Next Prev Page 2 of 9 Next 2. Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. Here's another popular strategy game from Blizzard, though with a decidedly fantasy theme. It was released way back in 2002 and features a single-player campaign story that's told through the eyes of four races: Humans, Orcs, the Undead, and the Night Elves. As with StarCraft, players are typically faced with a map covered in a black fog, which is slowly removed as you explores the area (Diablo does this, too). You begin by mining resources, building settlements and establishing troops in order to protect your assets and take control of other parts of the map. A day/night cycle keeps players on their toes, too. There are a total of five campaigns in Warcraft III that center on a specific race: one for the Night Elves, one for the Undead, one for the Humans, and two for the Orcs. Objectives are labeled as 'quests' and are rolled out as the player explores a map. The are both main quests an optional quests to perform, the former being required in order to move the story forward – natch. Aug 1, 2017 - Quicken for Mac doesn't get too much love. Have you used any software (Mac or online) with good design and running account totals? Quicken is a multipurpose personal finance management program that is used for meeting the requirements of personal financial management life. By using this program, the users can control the basic requirements of financial issues like money management, budgeting, income and expense management and many more. Quicken is available for both Mac OS X and Windows operating systems users. By using this personal finance management program the users of both operating systems can get a full command and control over each of their personal financial transactions. The main advantages of using Quicken are it is the provider of complete financial solution, provide bank level security, can be access from anywhere by sync it with the online account management system of Quicken, make the users able to see and track all of their bills and other financial transactions at one place. When it comes to reliability and accuracy then Quicken provide the users with state of the art bank level of reliability and accuracy. Well I had been a Quicken user for 15+ years, and I have watched it go from bad to worse over the last 10. Most recently it was actually screwing up my account records. When I searched around for an alternative, I came up with CountAbout. It does everything I need to keep track of my accounts. I never did use Quicken for investment tracking, so this was not important to me. What was important was the ability to access my info from my Android phone. Of course you can do this with Quicken if you go the “sync with the cloud” route, but if you are going to do that why not have it in the cloud in the first place? I find it liberating not to have to worry about a locally-based database, with all the backup implications. I have been an “early adopter” of Countabout for almost a year now, and I have to say that I am very happy with the product, its capabilities, and the incredibly rapid support response. For me there is no looking back. I have not opened Quicken for at least 6 months. I am not concerned with importing all my old Quicken data. ![]() I keep it around for historical reference purposes, but that’s all. Of course CountAbout has just released the Quicken import feature, for those who need it, along with a limited inclusion of investment balances, and multi-factor authentication. I’m very happy with CountAbout, and as long as they keep it as clean and light as it is now, I’m sure I will stay with it. The coming of “” 32bit app usage in the fall 2018 macOS release finally forced my hand: I was going to have to update my single longest-used app, Quicken 2007. I’ve been using Quicken in some form since 1994, but stopped with Quicken 2007—I found the newer versions worse than Quicken 2007, so I never upgraded. Yes, I was using an eleven-year-old app to track our family’s spending and investments. Basically because it worked (most of the time), and I didn’t like any of the alternatives, which I would occasionally test. But Quicken 2007 was showing its age. In addition to its 32bitness, it had other issues: The UI was tiny and horrid, the windows never opened where I closed them (‘s saved layouts to the rescue!), and online access to my accounts was nearly non-existent. Worst of all, it would crash on occasion, necessitating rebuilding all my data files. It was finally time to find its replacement. After —and asking on Twitter—I focused on three apps:,,. After looking at all three, I surprised myself by deciding that Quicken was the best tool for our use. Going in, I was dead set against it, mainly due to its annual subscription structure. (I hate subscription software in general, but as it turns out, this one.) Read on for brief overviews of each of these three apps (with more detail on Quicken) and my rationale for deciding on Quicken. Getting started I was looking for an app that • Imported our historical Quicken data I didn’t want to lose 24+ years of our financial data. If Google Chrome crashes, freezes or won't start at all, you might see one of these. If a specific page won't work, you can try to fix page loading problems. Google Chrome is the king of web browsers but if you’re here it’s probably because the king has gone a bit insane. Is Chrome running slow, crashing, freezing, or not even loading? Are web pages not loading anymore? Is your browser experience getting slower every day? If you’re experiencing any of those Chrome problems, you’ve come to the right place. We’re going to show you how to troubleshoot and resolve common Chrome problems that make you feel like Google hates Macs. Some fixes will be easier than others but none require advanced knowledge. If you’re ready to fix Chrome, let’s begin! Is it your Mac or Chrome that is slow? Chrome isn’t an independent entity, it’s part of a whole Mac ecosystem. So before you deal with Chrome, make sure the problem isn’t in your macOS. A quick example — the outdated system caches causing your Chrome plugins to crash. Or is your Mac gasping for free space? A clever path is to give your macOS a good cleanup. We like app for this purpose as it finds and cleans all redundant & conflicting files across all your folders. So, take 2 minutes to tidy up your Mac with CleanMyMac and let’s move further. CleanMyMac is available for a Common Chrome on Mac problems + fixes Mac battery draining fast Chrome is known for its fast performance, which it gets by using your Mac’s CPU more than other browsers. But more CPU usage means more battery drain. If you use your laptop on the go, this can become a huge issue. What good is performance if your battery is completely drained and you can’t turn on your Mac? If Mac battery life is important to you, then there’s a simple trick that should be a big help. Often there is a tab or an extension that is hogging your resources and burning through your battery life by itself. Follow these steps to find the offending site or extension: • Open Chrome and click on the Settings icon (three lines on top of each other). • Click on More Tools > Task Manager. • In Task Manager click the Memory column to sort them. Now you can determine what sites and extensions use up the most memory in Chrome. You can still visit one of these sites but maybe don’t leave it open in a tab anymore. Also remember that even sites that aren’t memory hogs can still be a battery drain if you have a lot of tabs open. Close resource-hungry and unnecessary tabs and the time you get from a battery charge should start to improve. Chrome is running slow Does Chrome on your Mac feel like browsing through a swamp? If browser responsiveness is slowing, it’s time to drain the swamp. Why is Google Chrome so slow? We mentioned earlier that Chrome is resource-heavy, especially on your CPU. Chrome is fast when your Mac has the resources available, but when they are limited, and Chrome is demanding more than your Mac can give – swamp time. The tip from Mac Battery Draining Fast will help a lot, but if you’re still experiencing slowness, there are other fixes you can turn to. Let’s start by focusing on cache. Chrome loves storing lots of your web browsing data. At first, it can help speed things along, but soon Chrome’s pockets are being weighed down by cache, particularly if your Mac is low on space or memory. To manually delete your Chrome cache on Mac: • Open Chrome and go to Settings > More Tools > Clear Browsing Data. • Select Clear Browsing Data. • Check the history, cache, cookie and other types of browser data that you want to delete. • Click Clear Browsing Data. Again, there’s another method for clearing out your cache, cookies, browser history, autofill form data and a whole lot more. There’s surely no easier way to manage not just the cache that’s slowing down Chrome, but also your privacy and security — if these things are important to you (they should be). To delete Chrome cache and other browsing data with CleanMyMac: • and launch CleanMyMac X. • Go to the Privacy tab and select Chrome. • Select what you want the app to clean from your system. Or you can even use CleanMyMac’s that not only removes Chrome cache files, it also gets rid of “temporary” files that clog up your system. ![]() By the way, you can and try it. A better performing Mac and a better performing Chrome all in one go. Chrome keeps freezing Your browser is not just slow as a snail but keeps freezing? A spinning circle appears for a while? This is an ordinary trouble with web browsers after continued use. And it may relate to the problem with the browser cache. We've already told you how to remove the Chrome cache, so just go to the previous section and choose the way that works best for you: manual or easy one. Hopefully, this will help you to get rid of the spinning beach ball and fix the freezing issue. Google Chrome is not responding However, if your browser is not responding at all and you can't open the menu to clear the cache, browsing history, or delete extensions, try to force quit Chrome and then launch it again. There are a few possible ways to force quit Google Chrome. ![]() Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac Update Free Update you copy of Micrsofts Virtual PC for Mac to take advantage of the latest features and bug fixes. Ottawa-based Corel Corp. Announced on Thursday that it has acquired Parallels, a software vendor best-known for the desktop virtualization software that allows Windows to run on Mac OS computers. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed in a press release. Corel says that it plans “significant investment into the Parallels business” and sees a chance to grow the combined business through the two firms’ customer bases and partner networks. It’s the third acquisition that Corel CEO Patrick Nichols has made this year and he says more are on the way. He says Corel, a private company, has been profitable over the years. “We take some of that profit and we use it to acquire new businesses or we invest it in the products we have,” he said in an interview with IT World Canada. “We’ll continue to be on the hunt for new opportunities.” Parallels was a good target because it has a similar go-to-market strategy, Nichols says, one that involves both direct online sales and two-tier distribution with various resellers around the world. On the same call, Parallels CEO Jack Zubarev says his private firm, which began with venture capital investments in 2001, was at the point of maturity that shareholders asked him to evaluate options for a buyer. Corel was the best option. “Given the scale, the synergies, the technology leverage that our customers will see in our road map, it makes sense,” he says. Parallels will operate as an independent unit within Corel for at least a year, Nichols says, as the firms get to know one another. From there, overaps in the backend systems and in the sales and marketing operations will be identified. “We see a lot of awesome opportunities,” Nichols says. “Parallels has a massive set of customers and we see cross-selling opportunities for the Corel suite there.” It will be business as usual for channel partners of both firms, at least to start with. Nichols says the firms’ overlap in sales strategies meant partners were already talking to the same people. Eventually, Corel will find ways to combine the organizations. Corel and Parallels have collaborated previously on software bundles. Readers of the Parallels blog got a hint of the acquisition Dec. 18 when the content feature was “.” Though the post didn’t actually indicate an acquisition was about to take place. Projections of the market paint a picture of rapid growth in the years ahead. According, the market was valued at almost $5 billion in 2017 and is projected to reach a value of nearly $9 billion by 2023, growing by 10.3 per cent annually. Behind the trend is the tendency to allow employees to procure and use devices of their own choice at works, meaning the IT department has to provide a secure virtual desktop to the user. Healthcare is one of the fastest-growing verticals to adopt desktop virtualization. Both Orbis Reseach and IDC rank Parallels as a major player in the desktop virtualization market. It competes with Citrix Systems, VMWare, Microsoft, and Huawei in this space. Parallels software is offered up at Apple and Microsoft stores as a virtualization solution for consumers that want Mac hardware and Windows software. It’s also a popular solution for the IT department. A reflecting user data on the Parallels blog identifies IT users as its top segment, followed by software, developers, finance, marketing, and design. • University or college — accredited public or private university or college (including community, junior, or vocational college) that grants degrees requiring not less than the equivalent of two years of full-time study* • Primary or secondary school — accredited public or private primary or secondary school providing full-time instruction* *Accredited schools are those that are recognized by the Ministry of Education or an equivalent government body. **Documents dated within the last six months are considered current. There are times when it becomes necessary or desirable to move mail from your Physics (or any other) email account into local folders on your computer. For instance, you are nearing your mail quota or you have personal or old email you wish to keep, but not in your account on the server. Using local folders is an option that most email clients provide for this (Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Outlook, etc. All offer 'Local Folders' or 'On My Mac'). These folders are stored on your computer's hard drive, but can be read by your email client as normal email and do not contribute to your mail server quota (see 'Backing Up' at bottom of page). How To Move Mail To Local Folders • Option 1 - Create a new folder in Local Folders/On My Mac. Name it whatever you'd like. Select and drag each message or a selection of message to this new folder. Once copied, you can delete those messages from the mail server to free up space. • Option 2 - Select an existing folder or put the messages you want to move into a folder in your mail account on the server. Then, when done, drag that folder to Local Folders/On My Mac. Watch the status messages so you know when the copy is complete. Large folders might take a while. (Apple Mail users, select Window -> Activity to show the activity monitor). Once the folder has been completely copied, you can delete the folder from the mail server (right click the folder and select 'delete'). If this folder doesn't change (i.e. ![]() - it's an archive of old mail), you can copy it to other computers as well, if you have more than one so you can see it there as well.
